How do I engage religious diversity in the classroom?

Come to “Religious Pluralism in Your School: A Two-Day Workshop for Educators”
June 18-19, 2009 – Chicago, IL – Hosted by the Latin School of Chicago, Lincoln Park neighborhood.

This workshop will be co-facilitated by the Global Youth Leadership Institute and Interfaith Youth Core.

Every day we see religious diversity in the world around us. We hear that religion is a problem to be avoided. How do we engage the reality of diversity in the classroom? How do we encourage dialogue and empathy among students? How do we create a community which supports religious pluralism?

Workshop activities will focus on how to be a leader in your community for religious pluralism, how to assess religious pluralism at your school, how to think critically about new ways to teach your curriculum, how to engage diversity among students, and will include a workshop by Dr. Eboo Patel, Founder and Executive Director of Interfaith Youth Core.

Outcomes of the workshop:
• Receive assessment tools to utilize at your school
• Gain classroom tips and activities through trainings by Interfaith Youth Core and Global Youth Leadership Institute
• Learn best practices of other institutions
• Create an action plan to increase religious pluralism at your school both in and out of the classroom
• Network with other educators who are concerned with this issue

Come learn new techniques to engage this important issue in the vibrant cultural center of Chicago. Evenings are free to enjoy the city!

Workshop cost: $400 per participant, which includes breakfast and lunch for both days.
Deadline for registration: June 10, 2009

Hi, All!

So I’m teaching Alex Kotlowitz’s book to juniors in my American Literature class. And lucky me, I have lots of freedom to do whatever I want with it. But I can’t seem to find many additional resources or ideas to supplement the novel (or maybe I’m just not looking in the right places).

Any ideas? Suggestions? ANYthing would be helpful!

Thank you!

Loyola University Chicago has received a grant from the United States’ Library of Congress to stimulate teachers’ use of primary sources creatively in their teaching. The Loyola University Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program helps K-12th grade educators use the Library of Congress’ rich reservoir of digitized primary source materials to design challenging, high-quality instruction. As part of the TPS program, Loyola is inviting all teachers to apply for a unique learning opportunity in the form of a tuition-paid, three-credit hour graduate course at our downtown campus.

Each teacher selected will receive free tuition for a three-credit graduate level Loyola course, CIEP 475 Curriculum Workshop: Teaching with Primary Sources. This course will expand the teacher’s ability to use primary sources from the Library of Congress’ online, digitized collections within classroom practices. In return, teachers who participate are expected to complete the course requirements as well as take part in occasional follow-up meetings, surveys and possible interviews. The course will be offered once in the Summer 2009 Semester, July thru the second week of August. Please see the application and informational form at http://www.luc.edu/tps/news.shtml for further details. Space is EXTREMELY limited for each please return applications by March 2.
