Dear ARC Fellows,

This is very late notice, but I'm passing it along anyway:

Tomorrow, Friday, at 11:00 A.M., Lou Broccolo, an ARC Fellow, will be leading a bike ride. They will meet at Lake Shore Drive and Monroe, assuming that the weather will be cooperating.

Lou has agreed to be ARC's Biking Events Facilitator. He will be announcing bike rides, as he sees fit and guided to do so. Anyone wishing to participate need only show up. I won't be there tomorrow, but I hope to be at future events.

According to Mr. Lou, he "might" ride on Columbus Day, so please put it on your respective calendars, in case you may be interested.

If anyone is interested, I will be attending the showing of a new independent movie, this Sunday, at the Landmark Century Cinemas, located at 2828 North Clark Street, in Chicago. The name of the film is "Bottle Shock." Showing time is 04:20 P.M. (1620). At the conclusion of the movie, there will be a discussion of the movie at a nearby restaurant. Here is a short synopsis of the movie:

There are certain unforgettable moments in history when America has triumphed against long odds and proved itself to the world: Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon; the U.S. Men's Hockey team beating the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. But one such moment has never received the recognition it deserves: In 1976, a small American winery sent shock waves through the industry by besting the exalted French wines in a blind tasting, putting California wines on the map for good. Novice vintner Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) risked everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted California Chardonnay. Sorry for the delay. I spent the last couple of days in our neighboring city of El Paso as a regional Kiwanis convention. Lots of businessmen and women and a few retired educators. It was an interesting change from the group with whom I spent all my working years.

In any case, this week’s carnival can be found at Joanne Jacobs’ site. She’s managed to select almost 50 recent pieces from various places on the web.

I was especially taken with a piece from PICCurrent which deals with the ongoing achievement gap in our public schools. I may have been a bit biased because the author quotes from Rethinking Schools, which is one of my favorite educational resources. Teacher in a Strange Land has an essay for the political junkies among us about John McCain’s take on the use of technology in the schools.

Due to a lot of people being on vacation and due to the fact that I did not remind people the week prior to the date of the book discussion, only a few of us were present. We have decided to reschedule the book discussion group meeting. For those who did not start the book or who were away on vacation, this will give them, and everyone, a chance to read the book at their leisure. The book will be the same, "The Road," by Cormack McCarthy.

Upcoming ARC Event @ Checkerboard Lounge, Sunday, 17 August 2008, at 07:00 P.M.

I pray that you are all doing well this summer.

The next scheduled ARC Event will be a combination dinner with jazz event. The jazz event is sponsored by the Hyde Park Jazz Society, an organization of which Ms. Judith Stein is the secretary and an active member, supporter and promoter.

It will take place on Sunday, 17 August 2008. The location: The Checkerboard Lounge for Jazz & Blues, which is located at 5201 South Harper.

(If you don't find close parking, your car will be parked for you for FREE. This establishment is also a SMOKE FREE environment.)

The doors open at 07:00 P.M. (1900), and the music begins at 07:30 P.M. (1930) and continues until 11:30 P.M. (2330), and patrons may leave at any convenient time. Admission into the lounge is $10.00 per person, with a $10.00 cover charge, which is the cost of two (2) drinks. (Both alcoholic and NON-alcoholic drinks are provided.) When I went there with my Lady Friend, this meant a total of two (2) drinks between us. I can explore what they would do for us as a group. Ideally, it would be one drink apiece, but I can explore this on the day of the event, as the charge is minimal.)

In my premier visit/experience there, I found the music to be jazz of a high quality. On Sunday, 17 August 2008, the following performers will be playing:

8/17: BRIENN PERRY, vocals Chip Stevens, piano Richard Drexler, piano/bass Leon Joyce, Jr., drums

Though drinks are sold at the Checkerboard Lounge for Jazz and Blues, food is not, but we are allowed to bring it in. I am suggesting that we secure meals at one of two (2) establishments that are in close proximity to the Checkerboard Lounge. I also suggest that we secure food between 06:30 P.M. (1830) and take it over to the Checkerboard when the doors open, at 07:00 P.M., so that we may sit together, as a group. The two (2) eating establishments are as follows:

a) Calypso Cafe (which is right next to the Checkerboard Lounge).

Rethinking Schools

Rethinking Schools is a quarterly magazine which, “Advocat[es]the reform of elementary and secondary public schools, with an emphasis on urban schools and issues of equity and social justice.”

If you have never checked out an issue of this periodical, I heartily recommend it. I have been a subscriber for years. The articles are thought-provoking (and occasionally just provoking). You can peruse a number of archived articles on their website (linked above).
